Endodontic treatment

Finding the tooth that hurts

Sometimes a tooth hurts and nothing shows on a radiograph, or the pain moves. We test the teeth one at a time, look at what the tests show and tell you what we find, including when the pain is not from a tooth.

How long it takes

  • Most diagnostic visits take one visit of about an hour.

What happens

The visit, step by step.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Listening

We ask where the pain is, when it comes and what sets it off.

  2. 02

Step 2: Testing, tooth by tooth

We test the teeth that could be the cause with cold, a bite test and a gentle tap.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Imaging

We take radiographs, and a three-dimensional scan if it will help.

  4. 04

Step 4: Telling you what we found

Dr. Krishnan says which tooth, if any, is the source, and what the options are.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Your dentist

We write to your dentist with our findings, whether or not the tooth needs treatment.

Before you decide

  • Comfort

Tests are quick and can be sharp for a moment. Tell us when it hurts; that is what we need to know. If treatment follows, the tooth is numbed first.

  • Other options, and waiting

Pain that is not understood tends to come back. A tooth with an infected nerve does not usually heal on its own, and waiting may cost the tooth.

  • Risks and after-care

Tests can miss a source of pain, and some pain does not come from a tooth at all. When we find none, we tell you, and send you back to your dentist with a note, or suggest who else to see.

  • How it is billed

We bill this as endodontic treatment, and give you a written estimate before it starts. We file claims with the plans we are in network with.

Questions about finding the tooth that hurts

Do I need a referral?

Many patients come with one. If you do not have one, call us and we will tell you what we need.

What if it is not a tooth?

We say so, and send a note to your dentist or doctor about what we found and did not find.

Will treatment happen at the first visit?

If the tooth is clearly the source and you agree, sometimes. We explain the options first.
